ICH SEHE NICHT, WAS ICH NICHT SEHE!

The quotation by Heinz von Foerster, which at first glance seems tautological, deals with the so-called “blind spot”. It designates the place in the human eye where the optic nerve is located that leads to the brain; at this very place the eye is blind. In Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory, the blind spot stands for the unconscious, latencies, etc. In order to surmount it, an observation of an observation must take place. The different systems are blind to each other—for example the economy and art—and cannot reciprocally communicate. The exception here is the medium of money: The system economy can communicate with the system art exclusively via money. The economic system reacts to art only in payment form. For the economy, artistic aesthetics, concepts or contents are blind
spots.
